International award-winning leather artisan Mary Girven, owner of ABQ Leather and Browncoat Fashions, will teach you how to make your very own Shiny wristband from start to finish, including leather cutting*, stamping, hole punching, edge finishing, staining, burnishing, riveting, and hand sewing (with both a leather needle and a sewing awl).
This is an “on the rim” type activity so plan on the possibility of gettin’ dirty. Pack some work duds in your suitcase, ones you don’t mind gettin’ stained (coz leather stain won’t come out!). Heads up: if you’re a real klutz, plan to keep your work duds separate from your ball finery on your way home (maybe in a plastic bag?). If you’ve got one, a Simon-style surgical/shop apron wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
Hmm, this is like the real deal (and a chance to get messy).
Whether you’re an experienced outer rim leather craftsman, or a core planet novice, you’ll enjoy this “hands on” track, and leave the 2012 BCB with your very own, custom-made keepsake, which you’ll treasure that much more ’cause ya dun it yurself!
*Note: The cutting will be demonstration only. Mary will do all of the cutting because the knives are super sharp and we don’t want to risk the Purple Bellies being called ’cause someone wasn’t careful and cut off a finger (or an ear)!
Lunch consists of a mighty fine spread from Chili’s!
Even if you can’t make it to this track, you can get your very own commemorative wristband here: http://browncoatfashions.com/bcb12/
